Are you passionate about ocean biodiversity data and its global impact? Do you want to play a key role in shaping how marine biodiversity information is mobilised, standardised, and enhanced? The Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS) is seeking a Co-Chair for the OBIS Data Coordination Group (DCG)—a vital leadership role at the heart of global marine data management.
The DCG is dedicated to advancing OBIS Priority Area 1: Data Mobilisation and Input. As one of two Co-Chairs, you will share leadership of bi-monthly meetings, facilitate discussions, and ensure the group remains an effective platform for tackling key challenges in marine biodiversity data. You will guide a dynamic, voluntary group of experts—including OBIS Secretariat members, OBIS node staff, and external specialists—to tackle critical issues such as:
🔹 Data and metadata standards – Ensuring consistency and interoperability
🔹 Data quality control – Enhancing accuracy and reliability
🔹 Taxonomy and vocabularies – Standardising species identification
🔹 Data mobilisation – Filling data gaps and integrating new datasets
🔹 Quality metrics – Assessing OBIS data completeness
You will also oversee updates to the OBIS Manual, coordinate with the OBIS Nodes Coordination Group, and engage with key international organisations (TDWG, GBIF, IOC/GOOS, SCOR).
This is an exceptional opportunity to lead, innovate, and collaborate within the global marine biodiversity data community. As Co-Chair, you will:
✅ Play a central role in the OBIS community
✅ Influence global data policies and best practices
✅ Collaborate with international experts and institutions
✅ Be part of OBIS Steering Group and Executive Committee
✅ Take an active role in deciding OBIS future
✅ Contribute to the advancement of open-access biodiversity data
We’re looking for a motivated individual with expertise in marine biodiversity data management, data standards, or related fields. Experience in collaborative leadership and international engagement is a plus. The role of DCG Co-chair is a voluntary position. Travel and accommodation costs for attending key OBIS meetings and events will be covered subject to availability of budget. The role is open to any member of the OBIS community and external applications are also welcome. If you are interested in joining the Coordination Group as a member, but not Co-Chair, please contact helpdesk@obis.org.
Join us in shaping the future of ocean biodiversity data!
