OBIS is seeking a Communication and Community Engagement Officer

OBIS is looking for a talented and flexible Community Engagement and Communication Officer to join its team! This consultancy offers a unique opportunity to work at the heart of the global marine biodiversity data community and contribute to strengthening communication, outreach, and collaboration across the OBIS network. The selected consultant will support OBIS’s community of Nodes and partners worldwide, as well as play a key role in the communication activities of the upcoming second phase of the UNESCO eDNA Expeditions.

The position is full-time for 11 months and is remote, with regular coordination with the OBIS Secretariat based in Ostend, Belgium. The role involves supporting community initiatives, developing communication strategies, managing content across platforms, and translating complex scientific information into clear and engaging materials tailored for different audiences. It is an excellent opportunity for a motivated communicator with a passion for marine biodiversity and global collaboration.

✅ The mission:

• Support and actively engage with the OBIS Nodes through newsletters, meeting reports, various communication materials, and community-facing activities.
• Develop and implement communication strategies as well as the corresponding assets for OBIS and the UNESCO eDNA Expeditions.
• Translate scientific outputs into audience-adapted content.
• Manage social media, web content, and outreach campaigns.
• Collect and showcase evidence of OBIS impact.
• Contribute to supporting training and capacity-building activities.

✅ The ideal candidate:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Environmental Sciences, Media/Communication, or a related field.
• Minimum of three years of relevant international experience in public relations, communication, and outreach.
• Proven experience in marine biodiversity or biodiversity information systems.
• Excellent writing and organizational skills, fluent in English (Spanish is a strong asset).
• Familiarity with communication tools, content management systems, graphic production tools, and social media for professional use.
• Capacity to work collaboratively in a diverse international community.
